Rising Star: Yoruba Moreu

Remember the name Yoruba Moreu, a rising star in the super bantamweight/featherweight division of the boxing world fighting out of Albuquerque New Mexico. I talked with him regarding his journey, his aspirations, and when his next fight is.

From Amateur to Pro

Yoruba Moreu turned professional in August 2025, boasting an impressive amateur record of 170 fights. His defining moment came after achieving elite status in the amateurs, marked by silver and bronze medals and a top 5 finish in the Elite division. Following the Golden Glove Nationals, he consulted with his team and made the leap to professional boxing. In March of 2025 he signed with the management group led by former world champion Tevin Farmer.

The Southpaw Transition and Title Aspirations

After switching to a southpaw stance, guided by suggestions from Johnny Tapia, Yoruba is determinedly pursuing a title fight. Despite his rising profile, he remains grounded, committed to the hard work and dedication required to climb the boxing ladder. His next fight was scheduled for January 9th however the opponent has pulled out so Moreu is eagerly awaiting an update.  He has a current record of 2-0 with both victories coming by way of KO.  His trainer is his father Yoruba Moreu Sr. who operates Moreu Boxing Gym.
